A few years ago I attended a wonderful conference in Denver called Deeper Still. It ranks among my favorite and most impactful conferences, which I have ever attended. The first portion from Kay Arthur, a beloved Bible teacher to me, is still a running text in my life today.
She called us Bible “light”, and what she meant by that is that we do not know what the Bible says from cover to cover. She said that for us to live this very hard and challenging life, we NEED to KNOW the WORD. And I would daresay that many of us, ME INCLUDED, know more about our friends on Facebook–their stories, work, family, vacations and even what they had for lunch–than we know about the Living God, who changes us and longs for us to know Him better.
What if we had GodBook, where we read God’s daily statuses? What might they look like? They might look a little bit like this:
Before you even call out, I will respond;
while you are still speaking, I will hear. Isaiah 65:24
I, the Lord your God am in your midst;
I am a warrior who can deliver.
I take great delight in you;
I will renew you by my love;
I shout for joy over you.” Zephaniah 3:17
You are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:14
And here is my “Godbook” version of this one, Today I told the wind to Calm down and Be quiet and it did. Mark 4:35 If only my children would be so obedient! (Ok, that was said tongue in cheek, as a joke…and yet it rings true, no?)
Oh that we may know Him MORE. When we face the challenges of this life, we need some weaponry to fight and keep getting back up for goodness’ sake! That weaponry is as simple as His Word on our tongue, as a prayer.
For this to ring true, we need to read what the Word says and begin to know it by heart.
Lord, may we know You and Your Word so well that we grow to understand You better. May we not only know of Your deeds, but may we know Your WAYS. That is how I want to be. I want to understand better, as I see your fingerprint on the dailiness of life. Even when disappointments come, may I recognize that You are in control and lovingly filtering some growth tests for me, that I may be strengthened to do this battle better. In Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen
